Steve Marsh Express Meets BJS International

Whilst looking about on my Flickr page i started thinking how me and Marshy were both owner’s of Hatcher cabbed MAN’s. Back in the day i had a 7.5 tonner but Marshy’s was a 12 tonner, naturally he was one step ahead. My truck definitely lived up to my expectations and was doing the mileage of any big truck if not more day after day up and down the motorway, Glasgow 3 times a week from my base in Braintree, Carmarthen daily for a week, exactly 4 1/2 hours each way every day, i loved it! Marshy was undoubtedly doing similar mileage but the majority of his was continental with a bit of UK, where i was vice versa. I never quite worked out why i didn’t do more continental?? i think it was probably that i was just so busy doing my thing i never got round to getting more into it. I used to see V99 STE around quite a lot, i often used to wave in the hope he’d wave back, but with out any luck, i think Marshy was just too busy doing his thing while i was doing mine. I think there is a big “what if” here some where. What if we had been going the same way and had had time to stop for a cuppa………….

I often wonder what would have happened if i had got more into continental express type work. There was clearly a market for it a few years back and Steve Marsh is testament to the fact there is still a market for it now. With the office job i do now for HC Wilson, each week we have a couple of job offers that would suit some thing like a 12 ton rigid, more often than not if we can’t cover it some how i end up offering it to Steve. I do wonder if I’ll ever go back to it, running a little rigid, i think the answer is one day yes it would be nice, or perhaps we should get one at Wilson’s!?

I have no idea why they are my favourite type of truck, after all a simple person would call a 7.5 tonner a van!………… that’s a totally different blog all together! I guess at the end of the day there will always be a market for these cracking little rigids with in haulage, but how many there is the unanswered question. Like all area’s of our industry the numbers have declined and only the fittest survive. These day’s with all the driving license issue’s and pallet networks offering such silly cheap rates it makes Steve Marsh Expresses daily life all the more difficult. I think what a lot of companies/customers miss is the personal touch, the knowledge that Steve loads and Steve will deliver. The load isn’t going to get transshipped 5 times and put on a number of different vehicles before being delivered. Is it that customers have realised that their goods are more important than always getting the cheapest rates? Hopefully there will always be a need for a little rigid otherwise in the years to come I’m not going to be able to buy my son one! (if he wants one of course!). Any way enough of this inane banter. Keep the little trucks rolling that’s what i say, everyone loves a Tonka toy!! So until the BJS empire is rebuilt, best you keep calling Marshy.

Follow on From Seddons on the Sand

After putting the pics of the Seddon Atkinson’s crossing the desert full of Mars Bars I had an ex OHS driver email me. Mr John Hope sent a few photo’s he took back in the day of his Seddon on its Middle East exploits. Although he cant have taken these first 2 himself! I wonder if what its loaded with……..

Privateijohnhope

TIR boards, windscreen flags, Union Jacks, Sunglasses holder, all the creature comforts, although i would like to know what the extra dial is on the top of the dashboard? On the first “Seddon’s in the Sand” post John left the following comment;

“I drove one of these Seddons, brilliant truck, LHD, Cummins, fuller gearbox, was able to pull Contex/OHS trailers in UK with them, as with the Mack i was overlength, so as a Brummie I could load for Midlands and clear at Perry Barr. The trucks were purchased by OHS as the dealer had originaly orderered them for Greece so sold at good price.”

So now you know how OHS came about the rare beast’s that were LHD Seddon Atkinson 400’s. John also sent this lovely set of Photo’s of him running with a PIE Volvo F89 through Turkey. The picture of the F89 coming round the corner was taken on one of the many bends on the road Canakkale. Regular jobs of the international Lorry driver, mending a puncture by the side of the road. You don’t see many drivers stopping to help each other out these days do you???! Also wash down time, the old girl deserves a bit of a shine up. Note the Mack badging on the grill, also note that due to all the hard work she has done (or the sticky stuff didn’t last), the photo’s above MACK has become MA.

Excellent photo’s John, please keep sending them through, the more you can send of the Seddons in or on their way to the sand, the better!

Competition Time – Dock Spotting

Now this is just a bit of fun for you lot on your 45 minute break perhaps…Any way have a look at picture 1 and 2 and see what you can see, there are some real old gems hidden in the depths of Dover docks. Well know companies, old manufacturers all sorts! I have to admit that the photo’s aren’t that clear, but i think that is down to me not knowing how to work the scanner, so if i get the time i will try and re-scan them to make them clearer. Leave you findings in the comments box below. Try and find the Eastern European truck manufacturer using a Dutch cab, also the yellow Volvo of a Suffolk haulier and finally who is pulling the load of tractors?…………….Happy findings readers. Just a tip if you double click on the picture twice you get a bigger version to at.

What is the World Coming To MAN?!

There are many things you can buy on the wonderous ebay, i myself like a little poke around to see what bargains i can find, afterall one man’s junk is another man’s  treasure. Regular reader of the blog, Peter Metcalf, alerted me to this item that surely doesn’t deserve to be auctioned off on the ebay?? This is a real bargain, have a read of the advert and you’ll be convinced that you need to make a bid. My wife has just pulled the laptop away from me, in fear of me making the bid! Click here to go to the advert on ebay, truckblog takes no responsibility for you making a bid!! Also the ad will go out of date shortly so be quick and be aware the link won’t work after the auction end date. In case the auction has finished, here are a couple of pics of the MAN that you missed out on………….. No i haven’t bought it!!

If by magic the sellers (SBI Logistics, Exeter) are reading this, i would love to see the new trucks, withs pics and specs for the readers to enjoy. Any way i hope you get the old one sold, send me an email, ben@truckblog.co.uk

Roving Reporter Finds……..

…..Not entirely sure what he has found to be honest!! Along with other’s he found this lurking in a yard in the deep south (Poole-ish). Now having had a good poke about he seems to think its a Magirus Deutz of army vintage. The evidence for this as i understand it is that the monstrous engine is a V12 Maggie Deutz, hold on let me check the text so i get it right, you know what the pilot is like! He said; “Maggie deutz i reckon” and “V12!”. So based on this i will happily go with it being a Maggie D until you tell me otherwise. The only thing that makes me think it could be something else, is that its right hand drive. Please email, ben@truckblog.co.uk or leave a comment below if you have any thing to add that may solve the mystery…..

Maggie Deutz??

Maggie Deutz??

Maggie Deutz??

Another Street View Gem!

So there we were talking in the office, the kind of late afternoon office banter that goes on, when you realise its nearly home time but not quite and you have lost the will to live……… the big boss man pipes up and says he followed a Google Street View car on his way home the other night. So we carried on chatting and i ended up searching the net to see what i could find out about being a Street View car driver. Easily distracted by any thing truck (hence the worldwide popularity of the blog!!) i came across a set of map coordinates and a title of  “Big Load on Flat Bed Truck”, how could i resist.
So i enter the world of Street View and look for a flatbed of some sort. Looking around i see this below, nice. A tidy International with a flat bed, an empty flat bed!
bridge truck 1.jpg

Anyway, a quick perv at the truck as she passes. Plenty of shiny shiny, those wicked long wheel nut covers, extra lights, nice paint, big single stack……..
bridge truck 2.jpg

Still looks good as she passes further, but still an empty trailer, so where is the Big Load??……..
bridge truck 3.jpg

Trailer looks tidy yes, nice spread axle you cant disagree, but where o where is that Big Load???……… Hang on a minute there is some thing on that there trailer on a bridge in New Orleans on the I10 east bound (and down, la, la, la)…….
bridge truck 4.jpg

HA HA some one some where has a sense of humour! “Big Load on Flat Bed Truck”, yea looks massive at least it’s provided us with some entertainment for 5 minutes, although that is 5 minutes of your life you wont get back……
bridge truck 5.jpg

Any way as i was on the bridge, i thought I’d see what our loaded flatbed was following. A mean looking Freightliner pulling concrete pipes. I like the short stacks, i think that’s what gives it the look! I should have put a pic of the pipe lashings instead. The lashings consist of 2 wire ropes running from the front of the trailer to the back, yea length ways. As long as he isn’t heading to Germany he vill be fine Ja!

MAN “Consistently Efficient” Tour 2011

The what i hear you say. The MAN “Consistently Efficient” Tour 2011 that’s what it says. I know i can read, i hear you say, but what does it involve?? Well the idea is that MAN are sending 3 trucks around Europe on a 10,000km trip to demonstrate how much fuel and CO2 can be saved in goods transport by road, using today’s technology. They are claiming with the right technology you can save 3 litres of fuel per 100km travelled. 3 MAN TGX artics set off from Munich yesterday on their 4 week tour of 20 European cities (although it looks to me like they aren’t coming to the UK!). There is a blog to follow the progress if you so wish, click here.

MAN Efficiency Tour Start

Nice yellow TGL in the corner of that picture by the way. Now because I’m not a literary genius, i don’t really know how else to say what the press release says, so i will paste in here the main info i think you’ll be interested in;

“On the Tour, two MAN TGX EfficientLine vehicles will be out to show that up to three litres of fuel per hundred kilometres can be saved in long-haul transport. The TGX EfficientLine, which was presented at the IAA in September 2010, is a truck designed for the highest level of fuel efficiency. And because the driver has a great deal of influence on the truck’s fuel consumption, an Economy training course at MAN ProfiDrive is included in the standard scope of delivery of the MAN TGX EfficientLine. In addition, the drive and suspension components, trailer, tyres, fuel and lubricants all influence the efficiency of the commercial vehicle. For this reason, MAN’s partners Castrol, Kögel, Michelin and ZF are also participating in the MAN “Consistently Efficient” Tour 2011.
The three MAN TGX trucks are carrying a very special cargo: the Tour’s messages – “Consistently Efficient”, “Save Fuel” and “Less CO2” in the form of lettering over two metres high. A transparent tarpaulin enables an unrestricted view of the striking lettering.
In order to ascertain and verify the consumption values precisely, the three trucks have already travelled the identical route, fully laden and under completely realistic conditions. This measurement run was overseen by TÜV Süd (Technical Control Board), while the MAN TeleMatics® system provided a clear overview of the vehicle data. Fuel consumption was permanently monitored by means of fuel consumption gauges and verified when the tanks were refilled.”

It seems the city list is as follows, with dates. If your out on the continent you can pop along!

Truckfest Peterborough 2011

I have been waiting for the inspiration to write a report about Truckfest but i just cant find it! Truckfest was Truckfest thats it. In my opinion the sooner Live Promotions realise that Truckfest is just another Truckfest the better. The show never changes, its the same format every year and i cant see it ever changing abd don’t ever get me started on the £17 yes £17 entry fee. You get to the gate part with your £17 then you walk through and get asked if you want to buy a programme for £5. So for 1 adult entering the show you can spend £22 before you even get 10ft in the gate, the worst point being you get NOTHING what so ever for your entry fee, disgraceful. There is one reason i didnt take my son to his first Truckfest, its the same reason i didnt waste another day of my wifes life at Truckfest, IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE!!! Live promotions are you reading?? I dont think i would mind the fee if you got some thing for it, some thing new in the arena perhaps, yes you guessed it, Monster Trucks, Stunt Display Bikes, Recovery Display etc etc. Good displays yes and highly entertaining, especially when one of the Monster trucks overturned!! Any way can some one please change the format next year or lower the entry fee???

Now as for the trucks, again a lot of the same, but there were all good. Lots of shiny metal and a few new vehicles that almost made the fee worth while, no actually perhaps not. Here are a few of my highlights in no particular order;

As some one recently said, it seemed as though the show should have been Scania-fest this year! Fingers crossed next year they may be a slight change to the set up.

Pulleyn Atego Fleet

Now if there is one fleet i would love to have some input on and from is Pulleyn Transport from Reading, especially the few Mercedes Benz Atego fridges they run on Pharmaceuticals. I think they currently run 4 x 04 reg Atego’s and 2 x 06 reg 1022 Atego’s. They are all kept busy on pharmaceutical work across the UK & Europe. Now with a history of little lorries, and one particular Atego in my portfolio i do rather like the top of the range tonka toys. I don’t see many Pulleyn trucks on my daily commute from Colchester to Stowmarket along the A12 and A14, so when i saw one up a head i thought i better try and get a photo. I can see space on that there tail lift for a truckblog sticker!

Pulleyn Atego (1).jpg

As you can see the trucks are well equipped and well turned out. The trucks themselves are fitted with 2 fridge motors, one for main use and one as a backup in case the main one breaks down, to avoid any damage or knock on affects to their usually highly valuable cargo’s. This particular truck was heading for Stenaline at Harwich for the night boat to Holland. Also more interestingly this truck was double manned. As  you might get the impression i really want to know more about what the truck was doing. I followed said truck along the A14 and onto the A12, then as i said the truck beared left and down the A120 towards Harwich and i carried on home (although i was very tempted to follow it all the way to Harwich!). I did get ahead of it at one point and grabbed a front view but only just, i’m sorry bit it’s not a good pic.

Pulleyn Atego (2).jpg

Now this is where my intrepid readers come in. I really want to get through to a driver of one of these trucks as i want them to contribute to the blog now and again. I know they do high profile work, but even so I’m sure sending me pics of an Atego around Europe isn’t going to cause to many problems (although me taking pics seems too!). If you know a driver at Pulleyn can you please pass on my request and suggest to the Atego drivers that fame and fortune, well fame awaits them if they want to contribute to what your reading. Email me or get them to email me; ben@truckblog.co.uk. I think i will try emailing Pulleyn direct and see if i get any response. In the mean time if you have anymore info also feel free to email me, pictures and info please…….

New MAN Truck & Bus iPhone / iPad App

Once again MAN are pushing ahead with technology. They are still the only European truck manufacturer who are using the modern technology to its fullest. This in my book is their 3rd iPhone App and if its half as good as the other 2 it will be well worth downloading. The previous App’s were the MAN IAA Show Guide 2010 and the current MAN TopUsed App.

NEW! MAN App (1).PNG

This new App “MAN Truck & Bus App” has been developed by PCH Berlin-Los Angeles, who look like they know what they are doing when its comes to these things, they are the creators of the IAA App after all. The new App will be available to download in the next couple of weeks, so keep checking the App Store.
The idea of this new App is to give a full overview and summary of MAN’s products and services. Covering buses as well as trucks for all you bus fans that must be good news. Saying that some of the buses at the IAA Show last year were stunning, you can see the life of “Blakey” On The Buses would be pretty pleasant these days!! The App will also give you lists of services and up to date news on the MAN group. The best bit for those who have MAN vehicles will be the GPS-based position that will locate you and your nearest MAN dealership / service partner.

NEW! MAN App (5).PNG

As i also mentioned you will be able to view the entire MAN range from trucks to buses. As you can see you’ll be able to view each model and get a full description of what it is and what its designed for. I hope i don’t wear out the TGL page!

NEW! MAN App (4).PNG

All in all i think I’ll be downloading it as soon as its available and I’ll also give you an update with how it works and my opinion of it. I’m sure you’ll all value that!! Well done MAN for being way ahead of your competitors, keep it going and hopefully one day the other will start doing the same. Also well done to PCH Berlin-Los Angeles for producing such easy to use and well finished App’s. I think it is also worth saying that these App’s are produced in Germany and any translation problems are none existent, they are that good! I’ll get off my corporate high horse and leave you to download the App when its released so you can see for yourselves….. (p.s. – no more use of the word App today!).
