Dual Fuel Heavy Truck

HC Wilson Transport are no strangers to high profile jobs and I’d consider the launch of one of first main stream duel fuel Hydrogen trucks to be just one of those. This truck has been developed by a company in Brentwood, Essex by the name of CMB Tech, using a Ford F-Max tractor unit. As we all know and read, the search for a suitable and practical alternative to diesel is on and as yet there has been nothing that will allow heavy trucks to do the range that you can currently get from a diesel. Electric trucks work but seemingly only on regional work where you can charge up and get round your day and home again on a single charge. Yes fast charge points are the answer so you can top on as you go about your days work, but honestly, does anyone know where you can stop and plug in anything bigger than a car or van? Electric will work for some but with the serious lack of parking facilities in the UK where do the government suggest we charge up. I didn’t use a question mark there as it’s not a question due to there being no sensible answer.

CMB Tech seem to be leading the independent charge on converting and applying Hydrogen technology to a multitude of vehicles and that has to be a good thing. Hydrogen vehicles are being looked at by the truck manufacturers and Mercedes-Benz have a prototype up and running but this isn’t likely to be mainstream until at least 2027, so perhaps a dual fuel conversion may be an option for those who want a quicker solution. According to the CMB Tech website their Hydrogen Truck 2.0 is being tested and can offer a saving of 80% on CO2 emissions over a conventional diesel. Wilson’s driver Ady Willis was tasked with both delivery and collection of the truck from CMB’s Essex workshops and taking the truck to Belgium for its official launch. I need to point out that Ady cleared all this with CMB so that’s why I can publish it on the blog. The truck may be based on a Ford but currently the hydrogen option isn’t offered by Ford themselves from what I can see. As well as some cracking photos, driver Ady offered a few words about the job;

“In the last week of May 2021, I collected the truck from Hutton, Brentwood (CMB Tech) and took it out to Antwerp Belgium for the launch. This included the truck being presented to the Belgium prime minister. Then in the last week of June I returned to pick it up again and return it back to its UK base. It is a duel fuel truck. The vehicle uses Ford’s 6 cylinder 12.7 litre engine with 500bhp. The 4×2 chassis sits on Fords 3600mm wheelbase, all in all it made for a nice different kind of trip”

Personally, even though I work in the industry I can alternative fuels coming for sure and all heavy truck manufacturers are working on solutions which is great. The problem and delay in all of this will be suitable infrastructure for everything to run on. For me the government are no where near having a working electrical charge network for trucks in the UK and goodness knows how that will work if you were to go international in an electric truck, just another toll box? Charging network at manufacturers service centres? Who knows. As for gas, that’s a non starter for me, but hydrogen, well it seems like it could just be the answer that will work for everyone involved. We will just have to wait and see, we’ll done to CMB Tech for producing such a good option, let’s hope we hear more about it in the mainstream press.

BeeDee & Road Route Ltd

Funny how you get talking to folk. I first spoke to Dylan Wren about a truck he was looking to buy, then we crossed paths again recently as he is an ex Centurion owner (#067). It took a little while for all the cigs to work but we soon realised we had spoken before. Having had a few text chats and a few telephone chats now, I could sit and listen to Dylan all day, plenty of tales from a long life transport and soon to be back in it too. Having sifted through 1000’s of photos, Dylan sent me a few over from where he started and where he ended up. Always great to see those who started on a 7.5 tonner, not quite a #littlebigcabclub member but at least he had the big trucker flags in the windscreen!

“Hello Ben its Dylan here found some serious memories today. My first truck D371DFA a Ford Cargo 31 years ago. Also you can see G930FSM a blue Volvo F12 on the net asking who owned it, we did. It’s on the net now in Stobart colours looks fab. From Bee Dee I changed it to Road Route Ltd. Remember the big tanks I told you about? you can see them on N392FWT & N391FWT – 1550 litres on a tag axle.”

“So many memories, you can see my big red Scania Topline and the other big Scania F600FKH which I bought from DS Walker with an Estepe high roof conversion.”

Now Dylan doesn’t mind me saying so, as the demise of Road Route Ltd is on the internet and was the same demise as many hauliers from the same period who were busy trying to make money from a tough industry with ever rising costs. Anyway, I love old tales and one such story Dylan told me involved one of the tag axle Volvos, 3 men in the cab, including Dylan and a rather quick run to Spain. Over to Dylan….

“It was with N392FWT, one of the Volvo FH420 tag’s. A full load of extremely urgent parts to take to the SEAT factory at Barcelona. Their were 3 of us in the cab and we left the yard on Sunday and were back in the yard by Tuesday evening. Boat out and train back in. We tipped Barcelona and collected a return load of fruit from Perpignan back to Lincolnshire. Even had time to fill up in Belgium on the way back, 1000 litres plus!?”

Well I reckon that’s pretty good going, Yorkshire, Barcelona, Yorkshire in just over 48 hours. Now don’t all start making comments and saying it can’t be done. We all know back then, there were ways and means and plenty of you will have similar stories. Thanks to Dylan for sharing these photos and details, hopefully more photos to come judging by the amount of albums full of photos I know he has!

Those who are happy enough to tell us you crazy run stories please do, just keep them believable!

New Ford Heavy Truck?

I’m sure Marco won’t mind me borrowing this, an unknown photographer but a good one! The supposed new Ford heavy truck range will be launched at the IAA Show in Hanover this coming September. I’m not to sure what it looks like but I bet Scania wish their designers had come up with the roof design! Looks good not sure on the headlights.

My Best Truck of 2014

For me this is the best truck I have seen in 2014. It might not be the newest, it might not be most practical for most of Europe and it certainly won’t be everyones taste but for me, spot on.


If you live in the UK and haven’t been to one I strongly advise that you make 2015 your first trip to a European truck show, the standard of trucks is amazing. I can’t deny that the trucks here in the UK are getting better and better but the Europeans just seem to have it right, they all look good. To me the best trucks have always been out of reach of what I could afford or achieve and the T560 is no different. We all joke about winning the lottery but a Tcab would be very close to the top of my list. It’s blue, it’s got two sets of pipes, it’s got a subtle custom interior and enough lights to make it look good but not over the top. As with anything I would make a few subtle changes as I’d want to put my mark on it.


2014 has seen a big rise in the blogs popularity through all mediums, the Facebook page, twitter and the good old fashioned http://www.truckblog.co.uk website. I’m not going to link to any of those this time round as I’m sure you all could do with a break from the ruthless links and plugs for the blog. I have no idea where the blog will be in another 12 months, hopefully you’ll all still send me stuff, photos, info and the odd piece of trucking memorabilia to decorate TBHQ and I’ll keep bugging the TV companies in the vague hope they’ll see that we need Truckblog TV!

Hopefully I’ll be visiting, Truckfest Peterborough, Crowfield Truck Rally, Gathering of the Griffin, Retro Truck Show at Gaydon, more than likely (and hopefully) Truckstar Festival at Assen as my foreign trip, although I have heard on the grapevine that there is quite a convoy of English motors heading to the International Trucker & Country Show held at Interlaken, CH. I have always wanted to go James?? Finally if the offer is still there then I might just make it to Belfast too.

Anyway thank you for following and thank you for making the blog what it is, without your contributions I’m sure you’d all be bored silly of 143’s, MAN TGL LX’s and Mercedes-Benz photos! As we all do secretly say now and again Keep on Trucking!


Ford Cargo is a Turkish Delight

Following on from my post the other week of an undercover Turkish Ford Cargo, I have had an email from Jay Grant, a driver of one of only 3 of these Ford Cargo’s in the UK. This photo was taken in La Jonquera, Spain, so Jay does get around a bit, but what does he do?? “Ford Motor Company” written on the front and an “FMC” number plate may be a clue or 2. Jay said in his first email;

“There are 3 in the UK, 2 x 2005’s and a 06…the 05s are artics and pull covered transporters and the 06 is wagon and drag transporter…the 05’s are going shortly as we have 2 new ones in Turkey awaiting collection….I work for Ford public affairs UK hence the Cargos.”

Naturally I wanted to know more about what his work involved, Public Affairs could be anything. Here’s what Jay said (I could put it into my own words but there really is no point!);

“Our work is really quite varied and not always all that glamorous lol…while we do move things like the concept and show cars about much of the time we only move support cars, these are often just Mondeo’s or Galaxy’s just for the crew to use to get about…last week I took 2 Torneo mini buses to Cologne…its a completely different way of working too, the emphasis is on getting it right with no damage even if it takes longer, and trust me if I’m loaded I drive like an old man…

We do a fair bit of publicity work too, a few weeks ago one of my colleagues took Katy B (I don’t know – Admin!) to a Sony event in Battersea power station in our XXL Torneo – this is a stretched Transit with full leather, dvd screen for every seat and is about 30ft long…I’ll have to get permission to send u a couple of pics….”

The stretched Transit sounds like fun! Hopefully Jay will grace us with some more photos. It’d be good to see these Turkish delights on their travels around Europe. Perhaps Jay will be flown out to Turkey to pick up his new truck from the factory?? That would be  photo fest!! I think Jay is looking forward to his new Cargo;

I’m not too sure yet which cab were getting but am hoping its the one in your photo (earlier blog post HERE), this is taller than the old and looks wider too…ours being a narrow cab design…I know they are moving from a 7 litre to 9 litre engine so should be a big improvement…”

Turkish Ford Cargo

Did you know this is a Ford Cargo? In an undercover guise obviously. The Ford Cargo is still produced by Ford in Turkey. This one was spotted in Portbury Docks on the back of an HC Wilson truck. Apparently it has come to the UK for crash testing. Judging by the  undercover livery and disguised panels my detective skills hint towards this having been on road trials in Turkey or some where else. Looking how dirty it is, plenty of road dirt and covered panels mean it has been running about but without the public being able to see the finished truck. Now the road trials have finished this poor truck must have been short listed to come to the UK for crash testing R.I.P.

Turkish Ford Cargo

I have to admit that I have really struggled to find a great deal out about these Turkish built Ford’s. All I can tell you is what I have found on the Ford Media website. I’m guessing that this particular truck is a new version of the current range of Ford Cargo’s. It must be a new cab or at least a heavily face-lifted cab and likely to have a new engine or mechanical set up, as the last version was released back in 2004. I don’t know if the last version had adblue but this prototype has the tank, so perhaps this is a new engine to meet Euro emissions regulations. The Ford website says of the current range of Ford Cargo’s;

“Ford Cargo Tractors cover a range of 18 to 40 tons with different axle configurations, payloads, and chassis lengths. There are three different cab styles that enhance the versatility of Ford Cargo. These variants make it suitable for wide variety of customer needs. Ford’s heavy truck manufacturing experience dates back 40 years in history. The current Ford Cargo was launched in 2004 model year and was developed in 5 years.”

Then interestingly enough it goes on to say all about how much testing the 2004 released truck went through, including a trip to the UK for testing at the same place where this new version was being delivered too;

“The Ford Cargo Tractor was tested for 15 million kilometers (8 million kilometers road test, 4 million kilometers structural durability test, 3 million kilometers cab durability test) in total before it was launched. Besides the durability, noise, vibration, harshness and safety tests completed entirely in the virtual environment, actual field tests are also conducted. The durability tests were carried on Ford’s Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium. The durability of the Ford Cargo cabs was tested in Istanbul Technical University. Ford Cargo Tractor proved its durability and reliability after this long period of stringent tests. Ford’s reputation in designing vehicles with superior driving dynamics and comfort is also valid for Ford Cargo trucks. Ride and handling performance evaluations were done in MIRA test track in England in comparison with the products of other European heavy truck competitors.”

I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for anymore undercover trucks.
