Norske MAN

image001.jpg

A little black beauty that’s what it is! I want to see some more photos if any one can help? Haga Traffikskule looks like it is a driver training school (and the name would suggest that too!). The little MAN doesn’t make much of an appearance on the website so i’m guessing that it is only used for publicity and promotional stuff. Although I would like to think that it is used for driving training itself, who knows??

When I passed my Class 2 (Rigid) test it was in a Leyland Freighter with a 30ft flat bed body. My Class 1 (Articulated) test was done in a Renault Premium wagon and drag which was full length and just over 4.5m high! Just imagine if you could do your license in that dear little thing, easy peasy!!

Any way can some one tell me a little more and can one of you send me a few more photos of the little black beauty please? You know how a little big-cabbed TGL is my idea of the perfect truck, so come on bloggers you are my eyes and ears, do your stuff then email me the results; ben@truckblog.co.uk — Thank you

Assen Trip……1 Week to Go

Assen NL 2009 (76)

! week to go until I finally go back to Truckstar Festival Assen in the Netherlands. I went way back in 2009 and have been trying to go back ever since. Why? Well if you ever went then I can almost guarantee you, you wouldn’t enjoy Truckfest ever again. For me Truckstar is my Mecca! It’s just trucks, trucks, trucks and perhaps a few trucks on the side. No crappy stalls selling chunky garden furniture or stalls selling binoculars and telescopes, it is just a TRUCK show, take note Live promotions!

This time around I will be taking HC Wilsons Scania 141, yes thank you and yes I am a lucky bugger. Off on next Thursday night Stenaline boat from Harwich to the Hoek of Holland, then a quick trip to the Tekno model factory, followed by a steady drive up to Assen in the north of Holland. That’s about it really, I have no idea how but I will try and update the blog, or the blog Facebook page from my phone or even the TB Twitter if I can. If you see a odd looking chap with a Tin Tin haircut and a TB T-shirt, it’ll probably be me, so please say hello. Other than that I hope I can update you, although my updates just won’t do the show justice. If you really are a truck lover then you must make the effort and go to this show at some point in your life. These pics here are just a few from my trip in 2009, but to see the rest just click HERE.

UJN Assen 2009

Finally a pic of my beloved Scania 141, that made my 1st trip to Assen just awesome. I still miss the truck but hopefully one day I can return to Assen with another classic V8, yea one day there will be another!

Trevor Starkes - Scania 143

Wife: Lets go and look at this posh kitchen place
Me: No ta its the hottest day of the year
Wife: But its only round the corner from my parents
Me: yea yea ok what ever makes you happy, light of my life

1 hour later we drove into a small industrial area in deepest Essex:

Me: I wonder who’s Fowler Welch trailer that is?
Wife: WTF?!
Me: Holy smoke its only bloomin Trevor Starkes 143!!

Trevor Starkes - Scania 143

A mere snap shot of the every day influences trucks have on my home life! Lucky for me the wife has given up paying any attention. I knew that Trevor Starkes was based around there some where and actually I had been past this place before and not seen the gleaming legend that is the Scania 143 owned and operated by Trevor Starkes. A name well know to those in and around the trucking circles of London and Essex, there have been many a classy motor bearing the name, but none quite so awesome as this aging Swedish Supermodel.

Trevor Starkes - Scania 143

Some of you would have seen Trevor in one of the magazines earlier this year, so most of us know that the big V8 is still regularly doing continental work. Mainly fridge work but still keeping the wheels turning on an older truck is these days becoming a harder business than in years gone by. What with low emission zones, euro class emissions rated tax and tolls, it’s becoming more and more difficult to keep the older generation running across the water. I know the Irish are still keeping the dreams of many older trucks alive, as are the Greeks, but even so its not easy. Hats off to Mr Starkes and I just wish there were more gorgeous old trucks like this lurking in yards a few miles from the in-laws house!! I hope Trevor didn’t mind me taking a few snaps when he wasn’t there, but lets face it, I certainly am not the only truck perv to take a photos of the old girl and I certainly won’t be the last………..Trevor, Mr Starkes if you get to read this please can you book yourself in the Gathering of the Griffin Truck Show that is being held at the Orwell Truckstop, Ipswich on the last weekend of September. Its a Scania only show and if any of you want to enter please call organiser Rob Bilman for your entry forms: +44 7903 155898.

Oh and no she’s not getting a new kitchen.

Mega MAN

Untitled

I was trying to think of some clever title with MAN in but it seemed a waste of what little brain power I have. Mega MAN says all you need to know. Every now and again I get an email that makes me think “Wow!”, which these days takes a bit more effort than a few years ago. If any nation can impress you in the world of trucks, our crazy Dutch cousins will always be right at the top of the list. It seems that the people at Becx TDS Racing may be 100% nuts! Click below and watch the video, that saves me writing loads of pointless words to try and impress you with…..I’ll stop.

Good eh?! What a beast and did you hear that turbo? No? then go play it again and come back in a minute………

Untitled

Now for the info straight from Edwin Kuijpers from Becx-TDS Racing………Two beahrs pleassh!

It is originally a MAN TGS18.480

We changed the complete chassis and shortened it at the front so the wheels are on the corners. The cabin is put lower and backwards on the chassis. (like the Brazilian racetrucks). The engine is gone 50 cm back in the chassis to get a good weight balance (60/40%)

The engine is a special race engine from MAN motorsport in Germany a delivers 1100HP and 5500Nm of torque. If we want we can put the power up to 1600HP en almost 7000 Nm of torque.

The top speed is >215 Km/h and the acceleration is 0-100Km/h. A set of tyres is gone in about 4 minutes of intensive driving and drifting. The truck is build complete build by our own team, and took 7000 hours in about a year.

Hope I send you enough information, otherwise you can see our website: www.becxtdsracing.nl

Hopefully we will hear more from Edwin and the others at Becx-TDS Racing. I am also hoping that they will do another video soon and even better perhaps they can do a video at Truckstar Festival in a few weekends time, just like last year.

Seeing as you are all so good at this detective lark, here’s you next assignment. Many moons ago I had a delightful and bloody hardworking MAN 8.163 which you may have heard me talk about once or twice before. It was such a good truck I rely didn’t want to let her go but needs must and all that. So when we parted company I sold her to dealer, Paul Binns Commercials. From there she ended up being cut down to a flatbed and was then used by a subbie delivering wooden sheds and things for Walton Garden Products.

20130627-213053.jpg

What I wanted to do was trace her life after her days on the sheds. I have checked the DVLA vehicle search and she hasn’t been taxed since 2008 and it says the truck has been exported. I’d love to track it down to where it was exported too, if its an island some where there’s a chance of finding it but if its Russia or something then there is no chance.

20130627-213545.jpg

First things first, I need to speak with the Walton Garden Buildings subbie. I am told his name was Simon Wainwright and came from Nottinghamshire some where. If you know anything about the truck or Simons whereabouts please can you email me or leave a comment, I’d love to find her, even better I’d love to see her now. I have one man on the search but he is man that’s in the category of ex Walton drivers so I’m quite hopeful. If you can add something positive then please do, surely one of you knows some thing. Truck reg was V413 KPU and was fitted with a Hatcher sky cab.

As it goes I am sponsoring the Best 3 Series, so as well as letting you lot know whats going on, I have to arrange some kind of trophy to give you!
