North DAFrica

20140119-201659.jpg

It had that look, you know the “I’ve been there done that dodgy ferry and got the scrapes to prove it” look. We booked a mega trailer to load for delivery to Malaga, I can tell you that it’s a bit of challenge to find them so you take what you can get. It was a Spanish DAF and trailer but with a far away look about it. I’m not sure what nationality the drivers were but I managed to get from them that they do hanging garments to Morocco and Algeria. The trailer was a monster and I’m sure the back end was over 3 metres internal height, it was huge! Although the truck and trailer looked like they needed a good holiday, the trailer had all the scrapes and nocks to show the hard life it’s lead between Europe and North Africa. I think I’m right in saying that the trailer goes unaccompanied to North Africa as often as it goes driver accompanied. Just to finish it off, the inside of the trailer was full of Arabic graffiti and what looked like counting. There must be some tall people out there for Them to reach the roof!! The day after loading this one came a brand new Krone Mega Garment carrier. Again a huge caesium of a trailer but all shiny new, I wonder how long it will take for it to look like the great white aircraft hanger above?!

On a side note if you know of any Spanish Mega Box operators please me know!

Quiet Saturday on the A1

20140112-091148.jpg

Yesterday I went to Newcastle upon Tyne to pick up a car an drive it back to Colchester. I was hoping for some top spotting but I was pretty disappointed. Well that was after my big blue Taxi had picked me up from the station. Matthew Johnson’s gorgeous Scania R500 really is gorgeous. As with most of last years top trucks, less is more. No over the top paint job, no crashed-into-Halfords over the top, too many lights, just clean, tidy, and very subtle. In my book it’s spot on. There aren’t many people who’ve had a guided tour of Newcastle in a V8 but I think it’s a great idea!

20140112-091855.jpg

Once I was on the A1 and heading south, the sky was blue with not a cloud in sight so I was looking forward to some top spotting on my 285 mile drive. I have to say it was very disappointing. Just a couple of Scottish fridges heading North and not a lot else. The best thing I came across South bound was another Scottish fridge, belonging to M.Mackinnon from Tarbet. She looked well and nicely painted in what I’d say was quite a traditional Scottish looking livery. I was a pity it wasn’t dark as there were a lot of lights on both the truck and trailer. A good looking truck.

20140112-092703.jpg

The rest of the journey was very quiet. I did see a GCS Johnson low loader with a set of extension beams in, but he was empty and heading home. I did see 3 new Renaults through Yorkshire. They seem to be like the Volvos, much better looking once they are painted up. Other than that it was a very simple straight forward 4.5 hour drive home.

Best Truck (Photo) of 2013

Truckstar Festival 2013 (498)

Please post your photos on the Facebook page, Twitter or email them to me at; ben@truckblog.co.uk and I will put them on the blog. Where can I start with what is my best truck of the year or my favourite photo. I’ve seen so many this years and have managed to visit a number of shows, which really makes it difficult to choose just one truck. Seeing as I write the blog I hope you will allow me to choose 3!
My first choice has to be the gorgeous Scania T500 from Dutch company Van Triest. I’m a sucker for a Tcab as it is, but this stunning truck just kept drawing me back each time I walked within 500 yards of the pit area at the Truckstar Festival, Assen back in July (if you’ve not been to this show, put it in your diary for 2014).

My only problem with the truck could be that its green, but as my Show partner, Mr James “Mick” Cartwright will confirm, me and green trucks had some sort of a weird bond going on at Assen this year. I think the Silver and green paintwork just looks awesome, just enough lights and bling for me too, and topped off with a cool mixed brown interior from Special Interior, NL. You have to agree it look just as good at night and I’m glad that I managed to make a half decent effort of a night shot. Amaze-balls.

In this case just 1 photo of the amazing War Machine built by Swedish trucknuts, Svetsab AB, is just not enough to do it justice. You might or might not like the mat black paint work. You might or might not like the artwork on the side. You might or might not like all the shiny stainless steel down both sides of the big Swede. But put the whole lot together and it becomes one of the most impressive trucks I think I’ve ever seen. Its got American big rig about it with all the stainless steel and chicken lights all over, but the clever Svetsab lads have put it all together so in no way does it look over done, in fact in my opinion it’s almost somehow got an air of “understated” about it, yea you know what I mean! Just because its NYE and I love this truck, I’ll spoil you with a video of said beast too;

Now if that doesn’t flick your butterfly valve then you shouldn’t be reading the blog, it’s just, its just…..i’m getting all misty eyed!! One more photo (ok 2) and onto the next truck.

Next up and to finish off, nothing quite so glam, but more to my own taste, which is why I want you to show me yours as I’ve shown you mine (oo-er!). This little Italian MAN TGL LX is my idea of perfection. I love the Tonka toys as it is, but this garment carrying, cool white TGL is just stunning. I have to add that this was not taken by me but the one and only Neil Jarrold from www.euro-wheels.com or if you’re a Facebook fan, go to his Wheels in Motion page, you wont find any better photos. If I win the Lotto tonight a little MAN like this would be first on my list of purchases. Note I did say purchases, next would be the War machine and 3rd would be THIS.

Cows that for a Big V8?!

20131229-171147.jpg

What a beauty, spotted parked at Cambridge Services having a break the week before Christmas by Michael Thompson. This stunningly plain example of a V8 Scania 730 was either on its way to on its way back from the Continent with another load of Irish Beef for our European cousins to enjoy over the festive period.

I’ve seen photos of this County Donegal registered V8 before coming in or out if Dover. I have to say that livestock is an area of transport that I know nothing about so why the choice of a 4×2 over a 6×2?? Some one will tell me I’m sure. Other than that who ever owns deserves a bravery medal for choosing a white truck and trailer to transport dirty cows from dirty farms but then again I guess that’s why the truck is so stunning because it’s not a livestock truck colour it’s a bit different. I think the trailer is one of those Italian built ones, Pezzaioli?? but again it would be nice if one of you could tell us a bit about livestock trucking.

Some of you know me too well I’m thinking. A certain Neil Jarrold clearly knows what my favourite truck is as I was the only person he tagged in one of his latest photos on Facebook. Yes I love the little MAN TGL LX and none more so than this, almost brand new Italian version. What more could I want from a little Tonka toy like this? I mean its got colour coded bumpers and mirrors, ally wheels, long-range ally fuel tank, tidy little hanging garment box, plain, understated and just dam smart!! I love it. As for the photo, that was taken by the man who spends many an hour standing on a bridge at Junction 9 on the M20 in Kent, yes the one and only Mr Neil Jarrold. Neil is a truck perv of the highest order (no matter what he says!), his career as a Volvo truck salesman means he knows a thing or two about most fleets in the country and was also responsible for the Volvo FH XL70 special edition. These days he runs a small used truck business, as well as continuing to take many a top class photo for us all to enjoy, such as the little MAN above.

www.euro-wheels.com

Neil’s photos are getting better and better, I mean you can’t get a better “on the move” photo of Paul Cecil’s delightful DAF than that. Really you can’t. The one problem with being a top class photographer is that there is always a few who want to abuse your talents. By this I mean those of you who right-click and save photos from the internet then either claim them as your own or put them ebay to sell for your own ill-gotten gains. If you want to use one of Neils or anyone else photos, then why not just give them a credit, after all, Neil takes his photos for us all to enjoy so why not repay the compliment by just adding to your use of the photo “Neil Jarrolds Photo” or “taken from www.euro-wheels.com” that way we all know where its come from, the photographer gets a mention for his great photo and you can’t be called a nob by all and sundry for nicking some one elses photograph. You all got it?? Good, now put the soap box away as I don’t need it. Although I will add that I actually saw one of my own photos on eBay for sale recently that I took at Assen this year. How do I know its mine?? because the muppet who was selling didn’t realise the 2 spots of the photo are scratches on my lens!

Any way please give credit to Neil Jarrold (and all other photographers for that matter) for his photos as one of these days he will stop making them public and the social media sites that we all enjoy looking at will soon become very dull places to be. If you want to see more of Neil’s handy cam work then go to either of the following;

Website: www.euro-wheels.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/wheelsinmotion

Thanks for the great photo of the MAN Neil and please keep taking photos, so the majority of us can just sit back and enjoy them. If you go to the Euro-wheels website you can trawl through loads of Albums of trucks back to the 1980’s and beyond.

All three of these photos are copyright of Neil Jarrold 2013.

Half Size Scania??

20131020-155658.jpg

I saw this photo on the interbookfaceweb and had to do a double take! Looks like a half size Scania to me from South America. Someone out there knows more or perhaps you know the man in the photo?? We need to find out more, does it work? Is it built from scratch or on a small chassis of some sort? It looks awesome and just proves that Scania could make a mini artic!! All info can be emailed or left as a comment below, over to you…….

Well Stuck Scania

20131015-213855.jpg

Or should that be well smart Scania?! This comes from Neil from Northampton, or should I say Neil with the green and yellow trucks, or should I just say Neil Rogers. Luckily at work we deal with EM Rogers Transport, usually giving them exports to France or Italy or them giving us Italian imports. Every now and then Neil emails over a real gem (to be honest they are all real gems!) like this gorgeously hard worked Patrick Scania 141.

Impressive spec, it’s LHD, must be the euro spec cab as its got the little window and mirror on the passenger door, roof tack and ladder, Scandinavian 4 spot bumper, little fuel tank perhaps to be filled from the trailer belly tank?? Anyway forget all that there are a few stickers on the truck too. What’s the 1978/1878 sticker behind the door and what are all the stickers on the windscreen under the window wipers??

Great photo, thank you Neil and thank you for letting me share it on here. One last thing for you truck spotters out there, I remember Neil saying that the real rare unphotographed truck on the fleet was a Renault Magnum wagon and drag. Has anyone got a photo of the rare French beast??!

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Some bloke called Freddie Mercury once sang:

“One man one goal one mission
One heart one goal just one solution
One flash of light yeah many Griffins One Vision”

Ok, so I changed a couple of words, but never did our Freddie realise that this was the perfect description of one Mr Rob Bilman and his vision of a Scania only show. It perfectly sums up Rob’s idea of a Scania only get together. A show for those who are fans of the Griffin both drivers and fans alike. The idea was that the 2013 show need to have a few more trucks than the 35-ish that attended the 2012 gathering. On the big day there were 118 confirmed trucks, but sadly a few pulled out and the final figure was 108 Scania’s all in the same place at the same time. What was also nice was that it wasn’t just the big V8’s that turned up, Scania 110, 111, 141, 112, 142, 113, 143 and of course many more modern motors were all present at the Ipswich based gathering. Next year surely we could get 200??

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

The show started on Saturday and ran through to Sunday afternoon. Saturday was supposed to be the arrival day and Sunday the public show day, but there were plenty of people have a look round on both days. I was due to go with a tasty Tcab but a last-minute change meant I had to ask a favour and took a mighty fine 143 from NC Cammack. I have to say that I was more than happy to take the 143 as a replacement, but all it has done has made me realise that I need a 143 in my life all the time. This also wasn’t helped by finding out that my favourite 143 at the show was for sale. Some of you won’t be shocked to hear that my wallet stayed in my pocket. Thanks Jim Cammack for the truck and I’m glad I took it as it got plenty of interest.

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

The show was broken down into series categories as well as best working truck and best fleet and a few others. Acting as Truckblog I sponsored the “Best 3 Series” category as this was the series I dreamed of owning as a schoolboy and also what I still dream of owning now! Due to yet another change of circumstances I judged the trucks myself. Now you would think judging 13 trucks would be pretty easy……. How wrong was I!! The judging guidelines were to choose the truck that I thought most deserved the prize, again not as easy as it sounds. I wasn’t swayed too much by cleanliness but in the end it did come down to one being shinier than the other. Unlike Truckfest (from what people say!!) I wasn’t bribed in any way, although Richard Payne and Dion Anderson deserve medals for their competitiveness, in my head I awarded them joint 3rd place. Richard Paynes 143 is just delightful and a true work of love. Richard also earned extra points for the authentic stickers and beer crates and also earned an extra point for the wicked Twin Trucker aerials mounted on the roof rack.

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Dion Andersons fully restored 113 Centurion is pure class. I think next year there should be a new class at the show for “Most Authentic Restoration”, in my book this truck would be a clear winner. Replicated maroon and gold Centurion stripes, grill badges, seat covers, it was all there and should be applauded. I even donated a photo of the original truck that I took at Silverstone when the truck was brand new.

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

2nd place went to the gorgeous blue and black Streamline M504 RRN, sorry not sure who the owner was. If I could own a Streamline I think this would be the one. I love the colours, and customisation, it’s just right in my book, a stunning truck and some gorgeous side pipes earned extra points. The only reason finally decided that this truck was 2nd in class was purely that it wasn’t quite as clean as the winner, other than that this was my personal favourite. Now where’s my wallet……

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

The winner of “Best 3 Series” was this show-room finished 143 450 Streamline that had come all the way from Scotland for the weekend. The truck is owned by Craig of Denny and is Super dooper clean and tidy. In fact it is in virtually new condition. Looking round the chassis and the cab it was just perfect and to me just looked like the perfect show room ready 3 series Scania. Although the black and blue 143 was my favourite, N40 COD was just straight and as clean can be. As a bit of a show goer myself I just felt I had to award the trophy to this truck as it was “as new” in my book a real credit to the owners, this could have brand new back in the late 1990’s the way the truck was. Spot on.

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

All in all my top 4 trucks could have all been the winner and it was massively difficult to choose just 1. Well done to all that I judged and I look forward to picking next years Best 3 Series.

Gathering of The Griffin 2013

This blue 142 summed up the show. Not glamorous, not ultra shiny covered chrome, just a well-loved Scania. The whole idea behind the show was for people who love their Scania’s……job done. For those who didn’t go you must put it in your diary for next year. A delightful little show that is organised purely and simply for the love of the trucks. Rob Bilman and Michelle Lines deserve a round of applause for organising such a great weekend. I hope next year I can find a truck to take and take part once again, in what can only be described as a true truck show. The whole weekend was rounded up and finished off with a huge convoy down the A14 with all 108 trucks taking to the road. In some ways it was a pity we weren’t in one continuous line but hey ho it certainly didn’t matter to me.
