How about that? I think that narrows it down some what. Mr Marsh sat in Lavrio Port, Greece waiting for the Salamis Lines ferry to??….you guessed it Cyprus. The job loaded in North Shields, GB and delivered to the vessel “Lewek Falcon” in Larnaca Port. The cargo was a 5 ton winch. The MAN for the job was Steve Marsh! Our top blogger and owner driver of Steve Marsh Express. Just while i’m hovering over the S.M.E. sales desk, there is really only one man worth trusting with such a job, when it’s crucial to get to a far away destination on time to meet a vessel that’s in Port for a few hours, call THE MARSH!

Now although we all love a photo Marshy didn’t start snapping until the sun started to shine, so first up on the way was the Port of Ancona in Italy. This place must be awesome. From what I can tell it is always rammo wall to wall with trucks, ships and any thing that will fit on a boat to the Islands of the Mediterranean. Luckily for our little MAN there was just room for him on the end of the row, while waiting for the Minoan Lines boat to Patras (I finally got a Minoan Lines sticker!). There was also a chance for the classic shot of truck next to ferry.

After arriving in Greece it was across to Lavrio in Greece for the Salamis Lines ferry to Cyprus. Having reached Lavrio, it was time for a weekend break before getting the Cyprus tub. Marshy wasn’t the only one weekended in Lavrio. Also in Lavrio port were 2 Jordanian’s who were putting 4 trucks on the boat to Israel to sell back in Jordan. Then they were flying back to Germany to pick up 2 more trucks. For those of you who aren’t too familiar with ferries to Cyprus, most tend to be multi-drop. By this I mean they tend to do a bit of a round trip rather than straight back and fourth. This ship was also bound for Haifa, Israel as well as Limassol. I know its out of focus, but Marshy spoke to this Dutch DAF driver, who was empty on his way to Israel, with what looks like a container trailer.

Dear Mr Marsh, I’m sorry to say I can’t remember which boat scene was the outgoing and which was the return. The on board boat shots are always good, as you can see who else is busy doing similar trips. I remember one leg out or back was quite busy from what Marshy said. Have a good look at both pics as I have no idea which is which, but the Greek Scania horse box is in both!

…Too easy for all you spotters! As you can see on arrival it was straight off the boat in Limassol and on the road to Larnaca. About 70 km down the road is the Port of Larnaca where the ships winch was safely delivered to the Vessel.

All that’s left after tipping is a wander back to Limassol, a wait for the boat back to Greece and then a long empty run back to Neuwied near Koblenz in Germany for a prearranged load back to the UK. Marshy has now been to more Mediterranean Islands than any gang of pesky Mosquito’s that we are all plagued with on our holidays. Saying that a week after his return from Cyprus the little MAN was right up North in Finland and then last trip, last week he was back at yet another Mediterranean island, but a lot, lot smaller, still a top class story to be told….another blog for another day. Now it’s time for the little MAN to have a rest under a palm tree and wait for his ferry back to Greece. Nice one Steve!

En-tyre-ly Different Class

Dutch Tyre Mini Artic

This lovely VW mini artic was spotted by top Scania man, owner driver Mike Tasker. Spotted in Holland last week, Mike says it’s a tyre wagon, belonging to Dutch firm Recamax. I have seen a few decent and ingenious tyre vans / trucks on the continent but none as smart as this little one. It looks like it’s almost big enough to be a complete tyre fitting workshop! Good Spot Mike, keep the pics coming.

I know you all love a bit of detective work, so can you help with this?? I found these pics on the interweb a while back now and I can’t actually remember where I found them. I do seem to remember they were taken at the Geiselwind Truckerfest in Germany a few years ago, perhaps even 2009.

For obvious reason I would like to trace the owner so I can do a bit of a follow up. I have to say in all my MAN TGL perving I have only ever seen these 4 pics of this truck. Not sure if that’s good or bad, hopefully its still on the road. So I need my detective bloggers to see what you can find out, I feel that the lucky driver of this TGL may be entitled to an “On the House” TB sticker! Not sure the colour is quite my cup of tea, but i’m loving the heavy customisation and all the lights, probably looks pretty as a picture at night (or a christmas tree!). The interiour looks like it has been properly retrimmed, again a first in a TGL from my memory banks. Sweet Little MAN

MAN TGL 8.220 Milka

I just found this very sweet little MAN on Flickr. It comes from ScaniaTheKing87’s Photostream. The little TGL must be used for promotional work as it’s bigger brother was also photogrpahed at the same time. If you look closely you can see a huge inflatable Milka cow on the top of the truck. The photos were taken in Torino and the plates are German so clearly promotional tour work for these 2 Milka men.

Dutch Knights of The Road

A few weeks back I asked about a German MAN TGL breakdown truck, I got a good email from a Dutch reader, Bauke Van Der Wal. Not only did Bauke tell me all about the Koopmann MAN he also told me about a big V8 Actros that Koopmann run, its worth searching on YouTube for the sound! I have since looked up the Koopmann website and it is so disappointing I wish I hadn’t looked, so we’ll get back to Bauke and Broekhuizen.

After getting through the Koopmann stuff, it turns out that Bauke is himself a Wrecker driver for Dutch firm Broekhuizen from Donkerbroek. Broekhuizen do all types of recovery, both national work in the Netherlands as well as International recovery. A mixed fleet by the looks of it. Bauke drives a few of the smaller trucks, but is currently doing training to enable him to work on the bigger trucks, like the 8×4 DAF’s and Volvo’s. Bauke said in his email;

“I work in the towing and recovery for the company Broekhuizen. I drive the most with the DAF 45 for the short distance and for the long distances with the Mercedes Atego. For the accident recovery when we have to use a crane I drive the DAF 95 6×2. Also I drive as second driver on the big DAF 95 Spacecab 8×4 or the FH16 8×4 when we have a big heavy recovery. I’m in training and learning for the heavy recovery.”

Looks like Bauke keeps himself busy and is quite a keen photographer too, so fingers crossed for more photos to come. It would be good to have a regular Dutch contributor. Wanted: Lightning Strike

I know it’s hard to capture Lightning on camera, but i’m hoping that one of you has some photos of this little DAF. It used to belong to Lightning Freight, who are no more, but i have had some emails from its old driver but he was never a camera man, so there are no pics to go with his info. This lovely looking Volvo F89 was spotted this week, by HC Wilson driver Jon Pryke. Eagle-eyed Jon as they call him in Elmswell, spotted this classic Swede parked in Unaccompanied bays at DFDS, Vlaardingen ready to ship to Immingham….to its new owner?? By the way although it’s Wilson coloured I don’t think it’s anything to do with them!!

From these pics it looks to be in fairly good condition and well look after. The bodywork looks straight and the paint looks relatively shiny and the little pair of stacks, well…
Anyway does anyone know any thing about who’s it is? It is clearly heading to a new owner some where in the UK or Ireland. It’d be nice to know who the owner is so we can all keep an eye out for it with a new coat of paint! The lucky owner must know a bargain when they see one, judging by the price tag….

Wilson Wednesday!!

HC Wilson that is. A regular feature here on the blog, my previous employers are the cream of the crop when it comes to International Abnormal Loads. So what better way to show you all what they get up to, than put up what they are up to on a Wednesday. Why on Wednesday’s?? because it makes a title! I have to say this week we are a little short on contributors, but hey ho, you’ll get what i’ve got.

V8 HCW

First up, above, is Gareth Rowlands in V8 HCW, a Scania R580 V8. A load of Machinery delivering to Leamington Spa this morning. Looks like he was accompanied by SW04 HCW, an aging but loyal, Scania 124 470 in the background.

WIL 2218 + B25

Above is Ian “Slim” Godfrey in the soon to be replaced DAF WIL 2218. This neatly sheeted load was from Dusseldorf, Germany to Kettering.

X300 HCW

Next is Jon Prkye in X300 HCW, a Scania R480. For those who know Mr Pryke, you’d know its his truck by the photo!! Loaded here with excavator tracks. These are not in there usual guise as you would have spotted. These are for such a large excavator that arrive on site unrolled and then are built onto said big ol’ digger! Loaded in Germany and delivered to a coal mine in Scotland.

You may have noticed that there isn’t actually anything particularly abnormal, so I thought I would include a Sunday night spot on the A12 (I was tipped off, not casually spotting!).

This was John Stocks in WIL 2580, a 250 ton GVW Scania 8×4 R580 V8. As I said I was tipped off of said beastie heading up the A12 to Harwich. Loaded with an 80 ton Rotor Shaft, heading off to the continent.

MAN Makes New Friends

What happens on sunny Mondays in Suomi? It seems the answer is meet up with other Western Europeans heading home. Our little friend Steve Marsh has this week been to Pori, Finland (yes really, I know he has just come back from Cyprus…some people get all the glory!). After receiving his email looking for a reload, I had to admit that i’m not that big in Finland. The only person I could think of was Dutch long haul trucking legend, Frank Hoogenboom and his beautiful black V8 Scania. Mr Hoogenboom spends his weeks taking flowers from the Netherlands to St Petersburg, then he reloads in Finland on the way home. I sent Frank a message telling him about Marshy, but unfortunately the message got a bit lost in translation, so Steve Marsh headed to Finnlines Helsinki Port to ship back empty to Travermunde, Germany.

Low and behold I then receive this picture message from Marshy. It turns out he parked up next to Frank waiting for the ship. I dare say Frank noticed the TB sticker on the little MAN and a new friendship was born…..ha ha ha I make myself laugh! Any way, Marshy was gutted that when he checked the photo and it was blurry, but on this occasion I really like the effect. I better also mention the white Scania in the middle is also Dutch and I think it’s driven by Henk Prins. The little MAN would give the big Scania’s a run for there money mileage wise I reckon, although I think the big black V8 may have a coat or 2 more polish on it than the little MAN! 😉

How often does one website highly recommend another website that could be consider direct competition??….. Not very often is the answer your looking for. There seems to be a huge hump for many interwebbers to get over, that being sharing stuff! Even down to photo’s on the World Wide WWW Web, we all know people who get the hump when their photo’s are used by some one else. I understand this gripe and it can be annoying, but if we are happy to put our photo’s on the net for millions to see what more do we expect?! Surely its a kind of honour if others want to copy and use own our pics/vids?? Any way I digress. I came across Mr Vernon’s website this week after a recommendation from some one, but I can’t for the life of me remember who! Lorry-driver.com is basically all about Luke Vernon’s daily trials and tribulations of being an international lorry driver for Irish firm Virginia Transport, piloting his Scania across Europe from Norway to Spain and further.

What really kept my interest was Luke’s Youtube Channel. When I was a driving all of modern technologies were just coming to fruition and I did make a couple of videos while driving but nothing like Luke’s. If you like simple long distance diaries or just driving, his videos are for you. I watched his most recent one which was a trip to Denmark (Bertie Goes Home).There are 3 years worth to trawl through, which is surely enough to keep you entertained on your nights out. The video below is the first one Luke put on Youtube and I have watched it myself. I love it because in my too short driving career I never got to drive across the Alps, so watching this gives me a Darn good idea on what i’ve missed out on. I’ll be posting various vids from Luke’s archives on here and hopefully from now-ish onwards i’ll post up ALL new one’s. Sit back, relax and enjoy Luke’s diaries.
